President Gigi Barnhill called the meeting of the Amherst Club to order at noon on Tuesday, August 8th, 2017, and welcomed us all.

Gigi introduced Emily, our new server at Bistro 63.
Welcome Emily!

Anyone who needs a new directory, or the club brochure, may pick them up next Tuesday from Gigi.

There is no brown bag lunch this month. Sad! (as our national president would say).

Announcements:

Note well: Carolyn Holstein’s phone number is wrong in our directory; her new number is 413-387-0141.

Amherst Club Gigantic and Delightful Tag Sale – Note the date: Sat. Sep. 9th, raindate Sunday 10th. The town has confirmed our reservation of the common. All proceeds will go to a Club charity. We hope to make some $$ for our charities!

Several people asked if the tag sale would have designated categories of merchandise: no used clothing, except genuine vintage pieces or artistic pieces. Accessories such as scarves, hats, and purses are acceptable.  No appliances. No food may be sold. The location is the Amherst Common; the hours are 9 am – 12 noon.

There is no charge to participate. Bring your own chair and blanket/table etc. Each participant must clean up after themselves, and remove all unsold merchandise by 1 pm.

Come one, come all - we'll have fun! Please let Linda know if you can participate (honan@cpe.umass.edu).
Speakers: Philippe Galaski introduced our speakers, Gretchen Krull and Amie Hyson from Voices From Inside, a program started in 1999 for incarcerated women in western Massachusetts, which teaches female inmates, and those in recovery programs from addiction or in supportive programs for the formerly incarcerated, how to write their experiences, both in prose and poetry. The program holds workshops in Chicopee, Springfield, Holyoke, Greenfield and South Hadley.   Many of the program participants have chosen to further their education, earning degrees from local colleges, and even publishing their writing. The speakers read us poems that were extraordinarily moving. To contact the program, email info@voicesfrominside.org.

Raffle:  Ruth Miller won the wine; Phyllis Lehrer won the $10.

Your scribe,

Linda Honan
