3 May: Award Recipients

President Andrea Battle called the meeting of the Amherst Club to order at noon on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016, and welcomed us all.

She particularly welcomed the representatives from all our grant recipients, present at this Awardees Lunch.

Andrea reminded us all that today was Valley Gives Day, and invited us all to contribute to our favorite charities during the day.

Joan Hanson announced that we were today distributing checks totaling $11,000 to our grant recipients. She is giving each of them a list of the donors and sponsors who made our largesse possible, so that they may encourage their associates to patronize these generous local businesses.

Vice-President Allen Hanson, chair of the Allocations Committee, congratulated the recipients as he handed each their check, and invited each of them to give a brief account of the work they are doing with their grant money.  The description brought to light so many kinds of need being met, or addressed, throughout the Valley. The representative of the final recipient, Soldier On, brought tears to our eyes as she described the horrific circumstances of the often abused and currently homeless women veterans now housed on the Veterans Administration campus in Leeds. Note that these women can use all kinds of household goods – dishes, bedding etc. – as they set up their own housekeeping on leaving their therapeutic stay at Leeds.

After the presentations, Andrea thanked the recipients for all the good they do, and wished them all a successful year.
